Natural Slate Roof ### Putting Right A Roof That Was Done Wrong The First Time This roof had already been done once, badly. Corners were cut on timber, fixings and detailing, and the roof was failing well before its time. We stripped it back to the structure, replaced the rotten rafters and battens, and rebuilt it properly with new membrane, correct fixings and a natural slate finish that will last. Underway ### The School House, Llangefni A full slate roof rebuild on the old School House in Llangefni. The slates and roof windows had reached the end of their life, so we have stripped the slope back, replaced the failed timbers, fitted new breathable membrane and treated battens, and set the roof up to take new roof windows and a proper slate finish. Finished photos will follow once the job is complete. Case Study ### The Importance Of Regular Roof Surveys We were called out to this property for what the owner thought was a guttering problem. One look over the roof told a very different story. Years without a survey had let moss take hold across the whole covering, and that moss was trapping water in the weather channels the tiles rely on to shed it. With nowhere to run, the water backed up underneath the tiles and sat there. Over time it rotted the nails and battens away to nothing, so the tiles had almost nothing left holding them. None of this was visible from the ground, and none of it would have got this far if the roof had been looked over each year. A yearly survey costs you nothing with us. Moss cleared and a few battens sorted early is a small job. Left alone, it becomes a stripped roof and a new covering. Now complete: the finished roof photos are below. Upcoming / In Progress ### A 15th Century Heritage Property, Autumn 2026 Our autumn 2026 project is a 15th century property in the hills of North Wales. These photos show the roof as we found it and the work underway: slates lifted by hand, the original structure opened up, and the whole roof sheeted every night to keep the weather out. Every slate is being reholed and reused, so the roof goes back looking exactly as it should on a building of this age. While stripping the roof we found a Victorian boot hidden in the void. Boots like this were built into old houses for good luck, so it is going straight back into the loft where it belongs.
